Primary Auxiliary Verbs

Primary Auxiliary verbs are of three types,

1. Be verb

– Tells the state of the subject

2. Do verb

– Tells what the subject does

3. Have verb

– Tells the possession* of the subject

*Possession: to have or to own something

The Primary auxiliary verbs are generally used to tell the

1. State (be verb)
I am happy.
You are lazy.

2. Description (be verb)
She is beautiful.
The tree is tall.

3. Action  (do verb)
He does a work.
We do our homework.

4. Possession (have verb)
He has a pen.
We have a book.

What is meant by a “Subject”?

A person or a thing or an animal can be considered as the Subject. These can do some actions. So, it is considered as a Subject.

Example:

Person: John, Tina, etc., are subjects.

Things: Computer, car, etc., are subjects. Because, computer works with the help of a human. There is an action. Car moves when someone drives and there is an action. So, these can be considered as subjects.

Animals: Dog, cat can do any action, so it is considered as the subject.
In short, a person or a thing is considered as a Subject. It can be in singular or plural form.

Note:

1. Subject is always placed in the beginning of the sentence.
2. The beginning word of each sentence is called “Subject.”
3. The following (second word) in a sentence is called “Verb”. In English, verb is always placed next to the subject of the sentence.

Examples of Subject and Verb.

1. This/ is good. Sub/verb
2. We/ are happy. Sub/verb
3. I/ do work.Sub/verb
4. He/ has chocolates. Sub/verb

Three Primary Auxiliary Verbs

To Be -To Do -To Have

The three primary auxiliary verbs are mentioned in a form, calledas Infinitive Form.

Infinitive form is mentioned as (to + Verb)

to + be = to be
to + have = to have
to + do = to do

The base form of the verb is mentioned as

Be Do Have

1. Be verb is an auxiliary verb, not an action verb.
2. Have verb is an auxiliary verb, not an action verb.
3. Do verb is considered as an auxiliary verb as well as an action verb.
4. Not only the primary auxiliary verbs have the infinitive form, but also the main verbs have the infinitive form.

Example: To read, to write, to sing, to dance, etc., (These are the action verbs.)

Note : The verbs in English take present form, past form and future form.
