Primary Auxiliary Verbs

Affirmative & Negative sentences –
“To Be verb” – Future tense

Generally, to convert any sentence into negative sentence, “not” is added next to the auxiliary verb.

In future tense, the term “not” should be added between “will and be”.

Example sentences:

  1. I will be happy.
    I will not be happy.
  2. You will be late.
    You will not be late.
  3. He will be sad.
    He will not be sad.
  4. We will be glad.
    We will not be glad.
  5. They will be strong.
    They will not be strong.

Exercise – 25

Convert the sentences into negative sentences :
  1. I will be late to the office.
  2. You will be excited.
  3. She will be happy.
  4. We will be tired.
  5. They will be polite.

YES/ NO type questions :

Yes/No type questions are considered as questions for the response as (“yes” or “no”).

Example:

  1. Are you an actor?

(Response can be )

Yes, I am an actor.

(Or)

No, I am not an actor.

(Subject+Verb) is the pattern to create simple sentences. To create Yes/No type questions, this pattern gets changed as (Verb+Subject).

  1. You are a teacher.
    Are you a teacher?
    Yes, I am a teacher.

For example:

  1. (I am) a doctor.
    Subject and Verb is replaced.
    (Am I) a doctor?
  2. (You are) happy.
    (Are you) happy?

Note:

  1. Punctuation is important in every sentence (question mark, full stop, exclamatory, etc,.)
  2. When the sentence is converted to a question form, question mark(?) as a punctuation is added to the end of the sentence.

Examples of primary auxiliary “to be” verb in Present form: (Yes/ No type questions)

  1. (I am) an astronaut.
    (Am I) an astronaut? / (Are you) an astronaut?
  2. (You are) from Africa.
    (Are you) from Africa?
  3. (He is) a professor?
    (Is he) a professor?
  4. (She is) beautiful.
    (Is she) beautiful?
  5. (This is) a laptop.
    (Is this) a laptop?
  6. (That is) her bag.
    (Is that) her bag?
  7. (It is) a rare diamond.
    (Is it) a rare diamond?
  8. (We are) good at painting.
    (Are we) good at painting? / (Are they) good at painting?
  9. (They are) good friends.
    (Are they) good friends?
  10. (These are) puppies.
    (Are these) puppies?
  11. (Those are) cucumbers.
    (Are those) cucumbers?

Exercise – 26

Create Yes/ No type question based on “to be” verb in Present form:
  1. I am responsible for this.
  2. You are Ria’s friend.
  3. Wilson is an architect.
  4. Sara is in the airport.
  5. It is a good idea.
  6. This product is available online.
  7. That kid is naughty.
  8. Students are happy.
  9. These clothes are from India.
  10. Those cars are in the garage.

Yes/No type questions – Past form of “to be” verb:

“Subject and verb” are interchanged in the sentence to create Yes/ No type questions.

Examples:
  1. (I was) a dancer.
    (Was I) a dancer? / (Were you) a dancer?
  2. (You were) an author.
    (Were you) an author?
  3. (He was) my colleague.
    (Was he) my colleague?
  4. (She was) sad.
    (Was she) sad?
  5. (It was) comfortable.
    (Was it) comfortable?
  6. (This was) a good brand in 19th century.
    (Was this) a good brand in 19th century?
  7. (That chair) was in the hall.
    (Was that) chair in the hall?
  8. (They were) in the church.
    (Were they) in the church?
  9. (These were) heavy to carry.
    (Were these) heavy to carry?
  10. (Those were) the pictures of the kings.
    (Were those) the pictures of the kings?

Exercise – 27

Change the sentences into Yes/ No type questions based on Past tense of “to be” verb:
  1. I was in London in 2010.
  2. You were a manager in the company.
  3. Your dad was in Malaysia last year.
  4. Her friend was a journalist.
  5. The flowerpot was beautiful.
  6. It program was a successful program.
  7. That gift was an unforgettable one.
  8. We were friends.
  9. They were tribes.
  10. These lights were attractive.
  11. Those members were absent yesterday.
Yes/ No type questions in Be verb – Future tense:

To convert the sentence into Yes/No type, the subject and verb are interchanged.

For example: “I will” should be converted into “Will I”

Example sentences:

  1. I will be happy.
    Will I be happy? / Will you be happy?
  2. You will be late.
    Will you be late?
  3. He will be sad.
    Will he be sad?
  4. We will be glad.
    Will we be glad?
  5. They will be strong.
    Will they be strong?
